The energy was electric in Oshkosh the weekend of April 12–13, as the Menomonie Red Cedar Thunder basketball team soared to victory at the Special Olympics State Tournament—claiming their first state championship title in a decade.
For players, coaches, and fans alike, this was more than just a win. It was the result of months of hard work, determination, and team spirit—qualities that truly define the Red Cedar Thunder.
Coach Kaden Fry, who has volunteered with the team for the past three years, was right there on the sidelines, cheering, guiding, and celebrating every moment. A former standout high school basketball player, Kaden now brings his passion for the game to Special Olympics athletes. When he’s not coaching, he works at Northern Plains, a company that proudly supports community involvement.
Kaden coached alongside Sean Van Someren and Tyler Harer, helping lead a team of remarkable athletes from across western Wisconsin to an unforgettable championship run. Together, they played with heart and hustle, showing what true teamwork looks like.
Adding to the pride was Steven Fry, Assistant Director of Training, Safety, and Operating Practices at Northern Plains—and Kaden’s proud dad—who cheered on the Thunder from the stands.
Congratulations to the Red Cedar Thunder, and thank you for reminding us all what it means to play with purpose, pride, and passion. Your victory is one the entire community will celebrate for years to come!
