Celebrating Jesse J. Chalich’s Love of Sports Through Community Giving
Jesse J. Chalich loved sports – whether it be those he or members of his family participated in, those played in the local communities that he called home, or cheering on his favorite professional teams.
Jesse had a keen and analytical mind for “the game.” While cheering someone on to victory, this uncanny ability allowed him to spot the key details that made a difference on a particular play that led to a successful outcome… or not!
As a tribute to Jesse, Northern Plains is deeply honored to announce our “Jesse J. Chalich Sports by Railroaders Fund” being established in his memory through the generosity of NP Chairman Gregg F. Haug.
The “Jesse J. Chalich Sports by Railroaders Fund” will accept annual applications from employees and others from across all Northern Plains companies to encourage the continued growth, sustainability, and development of sport in communities where perhaps funding is required and not otherwise available for key facilities, projects, and events. Examples that the Fund will consider are:
- Specific improvements to local football and/or baseball fields; local ice hockey facilities; and projects in regions where NPR/NPRS does business.
- Specific requirements for amateur teams in scholastic and related sports where funding may be limited or unavailable.
- Projects that encourage the continued growth and development of a sport in a community where funding may be limited or unavailable.
Jesse Chalich loved sports – and we have established two funds that will provide support to employees, friends, and communities where Northern Plains does business in Jesse’s honor. Here – Julie and Jesse meet and visit with “The Hawk” – Chicago Cubs legend Andre Dawson, in June 2019.
Deadline for 2026 applications is July 1, 2026.

Please provide details of the specific request, employee participation in and relationship to the request, and a brief summary that demonstrates the need and value to the local sporting community that would be achieved by a contribution from the Jesse J. Chalich Sports by Railroaders Fund.
