Northern Plains Rail Services

Cypress Rail, offering rail car storage at its Grand Forks facility.

New Era: Cypress Rail Takes Over NPRS Facilities

On October 2, 2024, Cypress Rail Solutions assumed operations of rail car shops and facilities formerly operated by Northern Plains Rail Services at both Erskine, Minnesota, and Grand Forks, North Dakota. In addition, Cypress assumed operations of several NPRS-operated mobile repair units. “Cypress Rail brings a senior leadership team with years of experience in car repairs and maintenance, including the capabilities to provide tank car qualification services. This transaction ensures that the NPRS Grand Forks Terminal continues to feature rail car repair services, while we work to continually build out other rail services on site, such as transloading and properties for rail shippers,” remarked NP President Jesse J. Chalich.

Cypress shop in Grand Forks
Strategically located in Northern Plains Grand Forks Terminal, Cypress now operates the rail car repair facility, offering comprehensive services to North American rail car fleets.

Northern Plains Railroad continues to maintain and operate its car repair shop at Fordville, ND, supporting the needs of its rail operations and shippers. In addition, NPRS provides switching, rail car storage and related services to Cypress to support operations at Grand Forks and Erskine.

NP Chairman Gregg F. Haug summarized the recent deal by saying, “We are looking forward to helping Cypress and its employees – many of them former Northern Plains railroaders – succeed as an industry partner in the upper Midwest. We’re pleased that this transaction will allow us each to focus on our core strengths, while working together to grow, develop, and prosper.”
